BUILDING COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
The purpose: to identify 15 vocal members of the community who were willing to be involved in building an environment for children’s appropriate development.
The community member introduced himself or herself and summarised the nature of their work. Most of the members are engaged in domestic work. They have little time available to spend with their children. Most were also the sole provider and leader of the household performing all family responsibilities.
The programme focused on the following key areas:
Drug addiction among children
Complexity of relationships among parents, which may add to psychological problems among children
Responsibility of fathers in rearing children
Basic factors when rearing children
Effect of the environment on children
Corporal punishment
Following completion of the above programme, it was found that many mothers put steps in place to avoid issues that hamper a child’s development.
Results:
This programme highlighted the importance of group formation for action in the community. Parents and the community at large were educated on the role our environment has to play in child development. This knowledge empowered the community to make decisions that benefit children thus having a positive effect on the community.
Members were identified that have the ability to influence the group. Members also chosen were those who have access to others in the community.
More and more supportive programmes were requested, as the local community understood the benefit of having the opportunity to convey their thoughts.
52 community participants and programme conductors attended the programme. Photographs are also included.

Nazma Khatoon and her sibling.
In March 2006, eight-year-old Nazma was found begging with her one year old sister at Lake Gardens. Hope’s Director developed a relationship with her family over a one-year period. It was discovered that her father sells flutes. Her parents eventually agreed to enroll Nazma in our preparatory centre. On 2nd January 2007 Nazma, Altaf, Raja, her younger brother and her eight-year-old maternal uncle Jahangeer were enrolled at our preparatory centre. It is a great achievement as no members of her family were educated previously. Moreover, the family contributed money toward school uniforms. Birth registration has also been completed for Nazma and Altaf. Nazma and Altaf are now enrolled at Ramkrishna G.S.F School. In the afternoons they attend our coaching centre. Raja is also attending formal school and her sister, Rehana who is 4 years old is attending our creche. |
