CRECHE
The CRÈCHE is for the underprivileged children in the age group of 1 1/2 year to 4 years. It was set up in September, 2003 to meet the needs of one of the most vulnerable and deprived groups of people, who move from site to site with their children and have no predictable pattern and no voice in society. The mothers of these children are fruit, flower and vegetable sellers. Some either work at construction sites or as maid servants. The meager income is not enough for them to survive. They live in tents, huts, basements or share part of a room with other families.
Achievements
| • |
Monthly Mother's meetings enables mothers to track the progress of their children. The meetings have also helped mothers to be more involved in the behavioural problems and counselling needs of their children, as well as, gaining knowledge of family planning. |
| • |
We have aslo provided adequate nutrition and health care to the children while offering day care.
|
The preliminary tasks involved in setting up the crèche were persuading the
mothers to leave their infants in the care of others, planning the routine of
hygiene, feeding and immunization, and a doctor to regularly check the babies.
The mothers are updated as regards their child's health and development through
informal conversations with the crèche workers.
The program is holistic and integrates all aspects of childcare. It covers
physical, cognitive, emotional, social and cultural aspects of child development
in a full filled child-to-child method. The crèche milieu is the ideal setting
for child-to-child approach, as children of all age groups live and learn
together.
Since the program responds to the needs of the community, their involvement in
the planning and evaluation of the inputs is ensured. The parents are at work
till late in the evening and the older child becomes the minder and guide as well
as the inspiration to the community.
The preventive health measures include the following:
Immunization
Regular supplementary nutrition
Special diet for malnourished and sick children and adults.
Care for pregnant and lactating women
Health and nutrition education for parents and children at the center
Supplementary Nutrition
The program supplies nutritious food items like milk, sprouted grain,
cereals and seasonal vegetables in suitable proportions over the day
Prophylactic doses of vitamins A and D, multi-vitamins and iron are also given.
The cognitive development of infants receive careful attention.
Stimulation is provided in the crèches with colorful, low cost play materials
like, rattles and stuff toys.
Activities involving the parents and the community are organized on a continuous
basis. A major organizational principal in crèche, which has been widely
accepted, absorbed and adopted into practice by the various categories of
workers, is that of integration.
Both the staff and the volunteers are multi skilled in their area of
expertise. They have to develop a broad spectrum of abilities, prepare budgets,
plan the finances and raise the budgets.
