CURRENT NEWS FOR THE YEAR 2003

Forsaken children of a lesser God
The director of the Irish Hope Foundation, Maureen Forrest was in the city to take part in a 11 day walk aimed at raising funds for the street children of Kolkata. Nilanjana Bhowmick, caught up with her to clarify where Kolkata stands with regards to the problems street children face and also experiences of the walk that started from the foothills of the Himalayas.

Did the walk live up to your expectations?
Absolutely. the walk was spectacular. This was my first visit to Sikkim and I was spellbound with the virgin beauty of the region. The funds that we managed to raise were higher than what we had expected. While we had hoped to raise 50,000 euros, we actually raised around 120,000 euros.
Is there any cause for concern for the condition of street children in Kolkata?
I found both the numbers and the conditions of street children in Kolkata appalling. If something is not done immediately they will become a tribe of lost children. Last year at the official function, the governor had put the number of street children at 200,000.
How much funds have you raised for the street children of Kolkata?
In the last four and a half years we have raised around four and half million euros and it has been used for the cause of street children in Kolkata.

An unusual boutique will open its doors on Wednesday, Ananya, located in a respectable south Kolkata residential area, will be manned and managed by sex workers. However, no eyebrows are being raised and the locals seem as excited by the boutique as the owners.
The boutique which will self dresses, paintings, pottery and jute works made by the sex workers and their children, is housed in a three storied building on Harish Mukherjee Road. The building funded by the Irish government, also has a training center. The entire project costs 50,000 euros. The project which is part of the Kalighat Women's Income Generation Program, an initiative of the Indian chapter of the Irish Hope Foundation in 1999, the women at Ananya were trained by professionals in various crafts.
Director of the Irish Hope Foundation, Maureen Forrest, who will be inaugurating the boutique, said there is a great demand for Indian embroidered products in Ireland. "We have already got an export license and we are thinking about opening a branch of the boutique in Ireland too".

Irish walk A group of 40 Irish and 15 Indian walkers have been trekking the foothills of the Himalayas, covering the stretch between Ganktok and Darjeeling spreading awareness about the underprivileged children of Kolkata. On since September, the walk concluded last week. the event has been jointly organized by the Hope Foundations of Kolkata and Ireland. The former works for the betterment of Kolkata's street children. Maureen Forrest, secretary of the Ireland branch, feels there is no better way of enjoying the natural wonders of the Himalayas than on foot and why not help a good cause when you are at it. The group visited various Hope Foundation projects across the city before embarking on the trek. Some of these projects include a mobile ambulance-cum-clinic for children in slums and a night shelter for children in Kalighat. Tollywood's Rupa Ganguly and Chiranjit Chakraborty have been very supportive.

Irish hope for city street children Four men and women from Ireland will trek the lower ranges of the Himalayas for 11 days to raise funds and spread awareness for the welfare of the "deprived and abused street children" of Kolkata. The walk has been organized by the Hope Kolkata Foundation in collaboration with Hope Foundation, Ireland. Each day the group will walk around 8 to 9 hours. With the funds raised from the Himalayan walk, the foundation plans to buy a mobile ambulance for street children. "Child watch" at night will also be arranged as it has been found that children are at high risk at night. The foundation will also provide for night shelter for these children from October in different parts of Kolkata.
Hope Kolkata Foundation asks supporters to climb a Mountain on 21st September, 2003
This is an innovative fund raising event by the organization. An opportunity of a lifetime, to explore the natural wonders of the Himalayas - on FOOT. Stretching for almost 1000 miles, the world's youngest and loftiest mountains are a treasure house of life.

The areas to be explored are Sikkim/Darjeeling, which is known as "The house for the adventure traveller and the casual tourist". Trekking in its various styles is an increasingly popular activity.

All the funds collected through this event will benefit the underprivileged children at HOPE. The event is therefore a unique combination of CHARITY and ADVENTURE.

Hope Flickers for the deprived - Sohini Bagchi
For hundreds of children in Kolkata and its vicinity, deprived of even the basic rights, organizations like Hope Foundation are nothing short of a support system. The Foundation offers rehabilitation and counseling to these children - including medical, nutritional, educational and vocational facilities.
It picks up street dwellers, children of sex workers, drug abusers, child laborers, or those suffering from sexually transmitted diseases or mental distress and takes them to their home at Panditya Place. The Foundation also runs a counseling center, a preparatory and coaching center there.
Says Hope director Geeta Venkatakrishnan, "The home accommodates 25 children, mostly traumatized children; who are without families or have been orphaned, and face acute loneliness and helplessness on the streets. Most of them have to go through psychological counseling".
The organization also carries out a number of projects focusing on health and education of children in and around the city. These projects have been proved very successful: a number of school dropouts, after going through rehabilitation have been readmitted to formal schools. Vocational training included as part of these projects have helped them become self-sufficient.
At the preparatory center, children are provided with an Accelerated Learning Program so that they can be placed in formal schools.
"The response of the local community has been very encouraging. We provide nutrition, health check-ups, sport facilities and also cultural activities for these children," says Venkatakrishnan.
Very soon, Hope Foundation plans to carry out an action-oriented project called Child Watch. The project will zero in on health issues of street children and underprivileged mothers. "It is painful to see children fall prey to diseases like AIDS," says overseas director Jenny Browne.
The Foundation's headquarters are in Ireland. It also runs other child oriented projects, carried out by NGOs like SEED, HIVE INDIA, and the West Bengal Council for Child Welfare.
