In Hope of a better, prosperous Kolkata
When was the last time that you saw the US Consul General George Sibly and his culturally inclined
singer wife Lee Alison dancing away as if they were at a carnival?
Well, if their spontaneous action is any yardstick of success of an event
then the charity ball hosted by the Kolkata chapter of an Irish NGO was
a runaway hit. With the Irish Consul General Phillip
McDonagh and his wife as the special gests for the evening, our very
own who's who of Kolkata's close circuit were amply entertained by the Irish
Tenors (band of three musicians) consisting of Paul Byrom, Tony
Norton and Ciaran Nagle.
"Vivekananda, Subhas Chandra Bose, Mother Teresa, all of who have a
special place in the history of India had a connection with my country,"
McDonagh said talking of the deep links between the two countries and why
the NGO was helping underpriviledged children and women from this part of
the country. Among those we met at this special do were Russie Modi,
actor Chironjit and his wife, Renu Roy.
However it was the guests from Ireland on their visit to India who seemed
to have the maximum fun even as they got introduced to a new culture, newer
people and a new city of which most of them had heard as Teresa's place
of work.
After what seemed like an evening that went past in a snap of a finger it
was time once again to break off from the insides of a five star hotel and
get on with the people who need the love, care and thought of these priviledged
people.

Celebs have a Gala time at Hope Charity Ball
It was raining celebrities at the Hyatt Regency
Hotel as it hosted the Hope Charity Ball in aid of the city's underpriviledged
children. The event was held in association with Spandan.
The glitterati at the event included the US Consul General George Sibly
and his wife Lee Alison, Irish Ambassador Phillip Mcdonagh and his wife,
actor Chiranjit and industrialist Russie Modi.
The program took off with a welcome address by Maureen Forrest, director
of Hope Foundation, Ireland. She spoke at length about the projects the
foundation has undertaken over the years. "Our foundation tries to
provide a bridge between those who can help and those who need it,"
she said.
She went on to add that the foundation's endeavour is to improve the condition
of the children of the world. Forrest's speech was followed by a performance
by Paul Byron, Tony Norton and Claran Nagle of the group The Irish Tenors.
It was a delight to watch the trio moving aroung freely, a friendly smile
on their lips.
Alsion Sibley was as bubbly as ever, mingling with guests and sharing
a conversation. Her husband George too looked smashing. Both seemed to
enjoy the evening to the hilt.
Actor Chironjit was taking keen interest in the evening's proceedings.
As the night rolled on it was time for dinner and dance.

The Irish Tenors impressed as much with their dark good looks and charm as with their powerful performance
at the charity ball organised by the Hope Kolkata Foundation at The Hyatt
on sunday evening.
Entertainment for a cause was at the heart of the event that was held
to raise funds for underpriviledged children in the city, supported by
Spandan. Irish ambassador Phillip McDonagh set the ball rolling, pointing
out that some of Bengal's biggest luminaries - Tagore, Swami Vivekanada,
Mother Teresa and Subhas Chandra Bose - all had an Irish connection.
A documentary on the works of the Hope Foundation, an Irish funding agency
supporting a number of projects for underpriviledged children, was screened
before the tenors - Paul Byron, Tony Norton and Ciaran Nagle - set the
tone with an evening of classic melody.
In an unconventional performance for a trio steeped in opera, the tenors
- who have collaborated with pop icons like Westlife and Sinead O'Connor
- breezed through a set that took in ballads, popular songs and nuggets
such as Ireland's "unofficial" anthem, Ireland's Call.
Harmonising brilliantly, the performers brought the house down with Molly
Malone, Carrik Furgus and Spanish Lady.
"Our brief is to try and tear down the walls tat often exist between
classically trained performers and a lay audience," said singer Ciaran
Nagle. With excellent backing tracks by the National Concert Orchestra
and great stage presence, the tennors had no trouble winning over the
room. A brief acapella interlude with Lee Alison Sibely, wife of US consul
general George N. Sibley, lent a touch of humour to the evening before
the tenors brought the curtains down with a spellbinding display of local
prowess.
