EDUCATION
Holistic Education Programme for children in need
Crèche: Day care for children of working mothers.
Coaching Centre: Additional learning skills for children in school
Target Population: 100 children are in attendance at the crèche and 225 children are in attendance at the coaching centre.
Geographical area: South Kolkata Ward Numbers 82, 85. 86 and 95

Brief Activities
Crèche: A holistic and integrative approach to all aspects of childcare covering health, nutrition and education. Shishu sathi crèche cares for children between the ages of one and half and four years, for half a day. The crèche cares for the children’s health, nutrition and education, as well as their emotional, social and cultural needs.
Coaching centre: Basic activities include Education, Health, Counseling, Mother meeting, Community meeting, Health check ups, Awareness & Advocacy programme, Capacity Building of Teachers in formal government run schools and in coaching centres and Networking with stakeholders.

Achievements:
A total of 100 children in need now have access to better early childhood development via the Hope crèche in Wards 82 and 85.
88% of children are regularly attending the crèche.
50% of crèche children are prepared for mainstreaming to formal school next year.
20% of children are placed in formal school at the end of the first quarter.
64% of children benefited from improved hygiene practices and health check ups.
44% of mothers are involved in the process of child education.
40% of children now have their birth registered.
A total of 225 children are receiving remedial coaching support through Hope coaching centres in Wards 82 and 85.
68% of children are attending coaching centres regularly.
97% of children are attending formal school regularly.
42% of parents have made an educational contribution to their children’s formal school.
78% of children are aware of the positive effects of good health and hygiene practices in reducing the risk of illness.
Counseling:
Thirty-three children have reported improved self-esteem as a result of individual counseling.
Forty-two children’s behaviour and attitude has improved after attending group counseling.
Forty children were treated for physical illness.
Children were referred to hospital and followed up where necessary.
60% increase in parent visits to formal schools was reported.
20% increase in family violence reported by the children.
5% indirect beneficiaries mainstreamed in formal schools.
93% of children were successfully promoted from one class to another.
20% of formal school teachers attended a training session on child abuse.
60% of formal schoolteachers attended training on child issues. Teachers who previously were not interested in training are now eager to attend training on Child Protection, Child Rights, Child abuse. All these sessions have been arranged in their schools for their own teachers and teachers from government schools.
20% of formal schoolteachers attended training on motivation skills. Formal school teachers were satisfied as they are now confident in the skills necessary to motivate children who are coming from poor families.
40% of formal schoolteachers & parents attended training on child protection issues. Formal school teachers, coaching teachers and crèche teachers were much more conscious about Child Protection, Child's Rights, communication techniques through joyful teaching methods etc. Field staff were also updated on these issues.
153% awareness level (an increase of 53% over and above the target capacity) regarding the benefit of education leading to a reduced number of children entering the child labour market. In addition, the community at large was made aware of the benefits of education. The community is now taking responsibility for ensuring that children attend school regularly and are protected from entering into child labour and other delinquent activities.
200% improvement (an increase of 100% over and above the target capacity) in the awareness levels on child issues among the stakeholders in ward 82.
100% networking done with ICDS centre in Wards 82 & 85.
46% networking completed with formal schools resulting in admission and waiver of school fees for 10 children.
50% networking completed with corporation and ward offices resulting in the registration of 40% of children. Children also received official birth certificates.
100% networking with other NGOs, ward counselors and MLA resulted in processing ration cards for 10% of children.
A total of 43 students from different schools and different classes attended the evening coaching centre of Hope Kolkata Foundation for the 2007- 2008 terms. Forty-two of these children have been promoted (despite family problems) to higher classes.

Other Highlights:
A team of six staff conducted an external social audit in the community to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices that the community have learned from the Hope Kolkata organisation regarding the conduct of mothers information meetings on a monthly basis, the availability of study materials for students, home visits, the importance of health and nutrition for children and the children’s performance in school. Mothers are informed that each child will receive a festival dress, a bag, and study materials from time to time. The audit concluded that the crèche and educational units are run in a very satisfactory manner and the community at large is informed on the services available.

Annual Sports:
The grand annual sports day was organized with different branches of Hope Kolkata foundation projects. The sports day was held on 1st February 2008 at Deshapriya park ground. The children attending were from various projects including Chetla lock gate, Chetla open shelter, Navadisha, Gariahat, Topsia and Tollygunge, The teachers, co-ordinators and the director of the organization all gathered at the Deshapriya Park. Mothers of the children also participated in the programme. The teachers and students made huge efforts to ensure the programme was a great success. The events arranged for the students included a potato race, frog race, balloon race, toffee race, biscuit race, balance race, needle race, math race, memory test, musical chair, running races (boys and girls). There was also an arrangement for a balance race for the staff and a musical chair event for all mothers. Refreshments and prizes were available for all children. Every student whole-heartedly participated in the event and were very proud to receive their prizes at the end of the day.
