EMERGENCY RELIEF
Emergency Relief following devastating fire at slum area of Tollygunj in 1999
An accidental incident resulted in a fire devastating the slum dwellings
at Tollygunj in April 1999. In an hour all dwellings were razed to the ground and fifteen hundred people
were left homeless. The Hope Kolkata Foundation in
conjunction with its partner NGO Cosmos reacted immediately by
providing temporary dwellings, nutrition, cooking utensils, clothing and
medical relief. Following the initial relief phase, The Hope Kolkata Foundation
funded the rebuilding of all dwellings and funded the sinking of tube
wells and the construction of public latrines.
Kolkata Floods Year 1999 and 2000
The city of Kolkata was devastated by floods, caused by the unprecedented heavy monsoons. Most affected by the floods were the
slum dwellers where unsuitable drainage and sewage systems compounded the situation and resulted in the need of a medical emergency. The Hope Foundation in partnership with its local NGO partner groups pooled their resources in a massive effort to stem the aftermath of the flooding. Due to the combined effort of all the groups concerned diseases such as cholera, typhoid, malaria and cerebral malaria were controlled keeping the loss of human life to a minimum.
The Hope Foundation and its partner NGOs established medical clinics in all the affected areas, such as Ultadanga and Kalighat.
Emergency relief following devastating fire at Ultadanga Year 2000
In the year 2000, the slum area of Ultadanga, home to 5,000 people, was razed to the ground following an accidental fire. The Hope
Foundation in conjunction with its partner NGO, SPAN immediately provided temporary dwellings, medical clinics, nutrition, clothing and cooking utensils. Following the aftermath the area was rebuilt.
