AASTHA - Care for children's health and nutrition
Project Title: Establishment of an outreach clinic for street and slum children
Target Population: 30
Geographical Area: South Kolkata (Ward No. 65,82,85,86,88,115)

Hope Kolkata Foundation recognize that children who live on the streets need to be supported in order to obtain access to adequate health services, education, a supply of water, proper sanitation and good nutrition, which are all essential for the survival of the street children. Our medical unit "Aastha" supported by Hope Ireland took shape in the month of November 2003, with a mission to provide treatment to the under privileged section of the targeted community in South Kolkata who have inadeqaute access to geneal healthcare, treatment and medicines due to extreme poverty. The organisation offers inputs to the street children through establishing outdoor clinics, awareness health camps and hospital facilities for primary, curative and tertiary care.

Brief Activities
To mobilize health services which are available locally such as:
Immunization programs through networking with other NGOs and Govt. and private hospitals
Provision of safe water and sanitation
Improved food distribution (eating habits and preparation at home)
Supply of essential drugs and vitamin tablets
Provision of a healthy environment
Regular medical check-ups and nutrition program
Protection against occupational hazards (battery breaking leading to lead poisoning)
Early diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation
•  Hospital referral (right to admission, proper treatment etc.). Admission and treatment in private and government hospitals and weekly clinics
Achievements
•  The clinic treated 400 - 500 families, and 50 - 70 children every week.
Educated 3,428 pavement dwellers on primary health, and preventive and curative health care.
We introduced a child protection mobile ambulance with equipment to treat emergency areas.
People living on the street and in slums are now able to identify common diseases through the symptom; children have adopted cleaner habits.
Family identity cards have enabled families to easily avail of Mobile Clinic services.
•  Developed a network with the Government and private nursing homes for referral of patients, thereby ensuring that more people get treatment. A free bed is also being offered by two hospitals.
An arrangement has been done with B.M. Birla Hospital and Calcutta Medical Research Institute for yearly check ups for street and slum people.
Case History
Uttam, a solvent addicted child of around 11 years old at Howrah Railway Station who used to come to our drop in center, met with an accident while trying to get on to Geetanjali Express train. Since children like him are used to searching for bottles, newspapers and leftovers they usually get into the train before it comes to a stop. Their occupation is hazardous and has involved many accidents earlier. Uttam while getting on the train slipped and fell on the track dismembering his right arm and right knee. He was admitted to Howrah General Hospital by members of our drop in center immediately. He was treated and now after operation he is placed in Howrah where he is receiving basic education health care and life skills training.
